Boys and Girls Basketball: With so many of the best teams losing their top players, who are the top teams to watch?

| | Comments (24) |

As we inch closer to the Nov. 25 season openers, tell us who the top teams and players are for the 2009-10 season. Diamond Ranch and Bishop Amat should dominate the girls, but the boys is a tough one. Diamond Ranch, Nogales, Northview, Bonita and Glendora all lost a strong group of players. Even Workman takes a step back with CJ Guerrero going back to St. John Bosco, making you wonder, is he even eligible? La Verne Lutheran? I'm wondering if I should include them in our rankings, because if I'm being honest, they're No. 1 by a longshot.

Will the good times continue at Nogales?

Below: These are how the rankings ended in March, how will they look when the season begins?
BOYS BASKETBALL
1. Diamond Ranch (22-4)
2. Nogales (21-7)
3. Northview (21-6)
4. Bonita (22-5)
5. Glendora (21-7)
6. Workman (19-5)
7. Bishop Amat (17-9)
8. Charter Oak (18-9)
9. Diamond Bar (16-12)
10. Damien (16-11)

GIRLS BASKETBALL
1. Diamond Ranch (21-4)
2. Bishop Amat (20-5)
3. Sierra Vista (21-3)
4. Bonita (17-9)
5. South Hills (17-7)
6. Walnut (16-8)
7. West Covina (15-9)
8. Northview (17-9)
9. San Dimas (14-11)
10. Covina (16-9)

After a year off, Lancers coach Richard Wiard is back. But when will the Lancers join the top teams in the Southland again?

bball coach is on the money with league by league look. Nogales could go either way, have some strength but only one proven talent at guard, they are well coached and a favorite. Forgot about Chino Hills, with Damien and Glendora,Sierra league is a fight. Agree on Miramonte 3 equally good teams will battle, favor COak but like BoHigh game.

Top Teams In Each League:

San Antonio: Nogales, South Hills, Rowland, Walnut
Sierra League: Chino Hills, Damien, Glendora
Montview: Workman, La Puente
Miramonte: Bonita, Diamond Ranch Charter Oak
Valle Vista: San Dimas, Baldwin Park, Northview

So Top 10 out of these teams:
(Chino Hills is not in tribune area)

I believe the miramonte league is real tough this year. Bonita, Diamond Ranch or Charter Oak can win that league.

1. Damien
2. Bonita
3. Diamond Ranch
4. Charter Oak
5. Glendora
6. Nogales
7. South Hills
8. Rowland
9. San Dimas
10. Baldwin Park

COak should be the favorite in Miramonte they return 3 or 4 starters, DRanch lost the bigs they usually find replacements, BHS returns 3 starters and a strong jr guard, Damien should run deep in CIF again, Glendora rebuilds and will contend, not sure about D1 player however?SD is much improved defense will be a question.

Rumor out of Sierra Vista.... Lockler to call it quits!

Keep dreamin' SG. Walnut will never beat Nogales by 25. Walnut will be lucky to win 3 league games this season. They look terrible. You're gonna be laughing it up alright, when Nogales shooters (and there's lots of 'em) rain down 3's on Walnut.

SG said:

Laughing it up when Walnut ripping Nogales by 25pts avg. in league play. No height! No shooters for coach Roper style of play!No post!
And thats for real! They will shoot 40 3's and maybe if they're hot make 8. Good luck with that style when you don't have the shooters.

Bonita said:

Hahahahaha. You have to be kidding. Bonita has a very solid team and they did not look average this summer...they actually looked very good. This is a very deep team with a good mixture of juniors and seniors. They do lack an athletic big man, but with the players they have and their coach, they will do VERY well this season.

bonita will just be average this year. They have Miller and Horine and that is it. They are small and they don't have a big man who can score. I saw them in the summer and they looked very average.

Walnut was always in Nogales' rear view mirror. AND, will be again this year. Even without Nogales' big man, Walnut will always be chasing Nogales. IT IS WHAT IT IS.

Walnut stunk it up last year, like they always do. Watched them a few times this year, they'll stink it up again.

bonita has a couple injuries right now. lets hope they recover quickly. other then that we look solid.

Those are rankings from LAST SEASON before the playoffs. They had very few decent wins because of their weak league schedule. Reality is they were the 3rd best team in their own city last year. Damien was at #10 and should have beat the state champs in the semis

DHS basketball...did I hear you say run the table next year? You've got to be kidding...do you realize that you're still in league with Chino Hills? And, what makes you think that CO is going to be a push over? And, who knows what kids these other teams might have coming up through the system...in basketball, you only need one very, very talented kid with an average supporting cast to be a great team. Here's my prediction, Damien is going to have a lot tougher time than you think and there is no way they go undefeated.

Why wouldn't La Verne Lutheran be included in your rankings?

Bonita said:

Aaron - this year's Bonita squad will be VERY good. They have some seasoned returning seniors (Woodruff, Fassas and Miller) and a very deep junior class (Northrup, Brungard (assuming he makes a quick recovery from FB injury), Horine among a few others). These kids have playig together for 6 or 7 years and very fundamentally sound (as all Bonita teams are) and they should challange DR for the Miramonte and make a deep run in CIF. They will be very fun to watch. Good luck to Coach Eckler and the team.

SGV said:

Wait, why the heck wouldn't LVL be included in the rankings Fred?

sgv said:

how is workmen in the top they not gonna be the same. they only had that one year of glory with cezar and he carried that team now lets see how they do with out him.

Bonita is always good under Coach Eckler, I honestly don't know what they have this year but he conditions his kids hard and they play excellent and sound defense. They do bring back six players so I have no doubt that they will be ready to play. I remember when I was a junior there was a guy who had played JV his soph and junior seasons and he started as a senior.

Ready for another great season GO BEARCATS!

Im thinking Damien and CO are top 10 teams as has already been stated, dont believe Glendora will not be in there, saw Bonita a little bit in the summer and they should still be tough. My surprise team for the year, a team that didn't do as well as they maybe could have last year and I think will do really well this year, is San Dimas.

DHS Basketball said:

Spartan checked MaxPreps and Josh Dominguez isn't on the roster. Are you sure he's playing is year? I did see football players Ryne Morrison and Alex Arevalo so I was wondering why Josgh was not listed? One more thing Clayton White listed at 5'1" which can't be true so maybe Maxpreps got it wrong. Anyway with Diamond Bar, Ayala, Glendora and Chino down this year look for Damien to battle a tough Chino Hills team in Derek Brown's senior season for the Sierra League Championship. Next year with the addition of South Hills, Claremont and Charter Oak the Spartans should run the table undefeated. GO Spartans.

Rumor out of El Monte High School is that long-time basketball coach John Gillette has been fired. Anything? Anyone?

COChargerfan said:

Fred J., here’s my two cents. You can't go wrong putting La Verne Lutheran on top because of the caliber of players that they have been able to recruit…they are probably in a league of their own. As for the rest, look for CO to perform well as they return four very good now senior starters from last year's playoff team plus will have the talented 6'5" Thropay to play center full time (he should be healed by early December) so they should be a contender in the always-tough Miramonte league battle between them, Diamond Ranch and Bonita. Diamond Ranch will definitely be a different team with the 6'10" center and 6'5” guard moving on to college and, unless they get a transfer, there weren’t any kids like that returning…expect them to play a more up-tempo game this year as they have some good 6’2”-6’3” athletes. Bottom line is that there’s no chance that DR goes undefeated in league again and they might very well come in 3rd place. Bonita always executes their screen and roll offense very well and will continue to have success…I believe that their JV and freshman teams both won league last year…the question mark is do they have a true center? Glendora, like these other teams, is well coached and they have a potential D1 player in Calvin Smith…the very big question mark is whether they can get points from more than two players? And Spartan, I saw Damien play a few times over the summer and also know a few of your kids and I agree that your team is on the up swing and should be ranked with the best teams. From what I saw over the summer, my guess is that both Workman and Northview are heading dead south in the rankings. And, Nogales’ most talented player also happens to be their biggest problem child so their future may be dependent upon his maturation; unfortunately, this appears to be a long shot so they may also be heading down the list.

Spartan said:

Fred, look at Damien they have to be ranked in the top 5, they made it to the semifinals and still have back: All CIF 2 Guard Chris Adams, Terrell Bolden who played alot at PG as a junior, Chris Reyes at 6'7 is the one of the best post players in California for sophmores just look at espn to verify, he played alot as a freshman on varsity last year. A PG/SG/C all back with alot of experience, add in last years JV class led by pg Clayton White, Forwards Ryan Tatera and JP Chabazov in addition to the return of football players Ryne Morrison and Josh Dominguez to SG/SF, the Spartans have the making of a championship team

Walnut will take the spot light away from Nogales for the next 2 years.
